Coffee Bay

On the weekend of January 15th and 16th, we drove out to Coffee Bay on the coast. Brian and Lynell were there to attend a wedding, we were there to hang out on the beach.

We stayed at a B&B right on the ocean.

Coffee Bay B & B

The weather reports leading up to our drive out to Coffee Bay kept saying that there was a good chance for rain. But when we got out there, it never came. Too cloudy for stars though.

The boys were given the option of going to the wedding on Saturday evening or hanging out on the beach with us. Guess which one they chose?

Building a Dam

Yeah, they’re good kids, but they’re not crazy.

The next morning, most of us took a hike along the coast to a rock formation called “Hole in the Wall.” It’s your basic sea cave. The hike was about 10 km. Wherever we went, we attracted kids begging for candy or money. They would follow us until we came to a hill and then they’d turn back rather than climb it.

There were a couple of kids in one group that had a cool little toy. It was what looked like a shoe polish can with a hole punched through the middle. A stiff wire was passed through the hole and then wrapped around a stick. They would hold the stick so that the can rolled along the ground like a wheel. Well, I thought it was cool anyway. Brian tells me that kids have all kinds of creative toys like this.

Here’s another picture of the coastline from our hike. Click on it to get the larger version because I want you to notice something.

Wild Coast Beach

See that?...It’s a beautiful, clear day. It’s Sunday afternoon. School holidays are still going on. So where are all the people? Those little specks you see there down on the beach? Those are cows. Maybe we came on a slow day or something, but it seems to me that this is one of those little “hidden treasures” that guidebooks don’t mention because it would spoil it for everyone. And now I’ve gone and ruined it. Sorry about that.

Why are cows standing on the beach where there is no shade and no grass to eat? I guess that’s part of why we eat them and not the other way around.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot, here’s the Hole in the Wall.
