Geek Stuff

As I’m about to head off on the vacation, I thought I’d write a little about how I’m going to be writing this travelogue. I mean, God forbid I use a pen and paper or something like that. Geeky details to follow.
Alas, my poor PowerBook is too fragile to make any kind of trip (an interesting and tragic story for another day), much less one to another continent. Even if it could make it, I don’t think I’d want to lug it around anyway, so that’s out.
Instead, I’m using my pda. It’s an ancient (1999!) Windows CE Casio. Since it’s so old and I hardly ever use it, I don’t care if I break it or get it stolen or whatever. I’ve got a 32 MB CF card that I’m using to store all these entries. I’ll remove the card and keep it with my passport so I don’t lose these precious words.
To enter text, I have a mini keyboard that is pretty nice once you get used to it. It’s a little scrunched up, but it lets me type pretty fast.
Photos will go on a 256 MB CF card in my camera. That should be big enough to hold as much pictures as I can take in three weeks. If not, I could always buy another card somewhere.
Lastly, I have a power transformer and electrical adapter suitable for South African electricity so that I can keep all the batteries recharged. The pda battery is pretty crappy at this point, but it will allow me about an hour of typing. The camera battery lasts longer than I’ve been able to measure, so I should be safe on that front.
I don’t think I’ll be able to transfer any of these entires out of my pda and onto the web until after I get back, but you never know. I might try to enter some stuff directly at my brother’s place assuming that’s an option.
Oh yeah. If I can’t get any of this to work, I’m also bringing along a notebook and a pen.
